For many months now rumors have claimed that Samsung, Apple, or both companies will come out with devices sporting a fingerprint scanner embedded in the display this year. When that didn’t happen for the Galaxy S8 and S8+, the speculation switched its focus onto the upcoming Note8. And for Apple this has always been claimed with regard to the tenth anniversary iPhone, the one that will be called either iPhone 8 or iPhone X.
But if a new report from China is accurate, vivo is set to one-up both Samsung and Apple from this point of view. The company already has a working prototype for such a fingerprint scanner, as you can see in the leaked image below.
A new Vivo smartphone has been leaked in a video purportedly showing an on-screen fingerprint sensor. The blurry short clip was shared on Weibo, and showed a Vivo-branded smartphone purportedly being unlocked using the fingerprint sensor embedded in the screen. The 4-seconds short clip showed the phone sporting an all-metal unibody design with dual-rear cameras.
Smartphone analyst Pan Jiutang shared the short clip on Weibo, and added that Vivo will be the first to launch a smartphone with the technology. Jiutang, however, adds in his Weibo post that Apple will be the manufacturer that will bring the tech into the ‘global mainstream’. If this video is legitimate – and it’s kinda hard to tell from such a short video – Vivo may showcase this technology at the upcoming Mobile World Congress in Shanghai later this month.
